Ancient Thoughts

BIG THUNDER (BEDAGI)
(late 19th century) Waanaki Algonquin
~~~
The Great Spirit is in all things;
he is in the air we breathe.
The Great Spirit is our Father,
the earth is our Mother.
She nourishes us;
that which we put into the ground
she returns to us....
~~~

EAGLE CHIEF (LETAKOTS – LESA)
(late 19th century) Pawnee
~~~
…FROM THE STARS
AND THE SUN AND THE MOON
MAN SHOULD LEARN.
~~~

JOSEPH (HINMATON YALATKIT)
(1830 –1904) Nez Perce Chief
~~~
Whenever the Whiteman treats the Indian as they treat each other,
then we will have no more wars. We shall all be alike — brothers of one father,
one mother, with one sky above us and around us,
and one Government for all.
~~~
The earth and myself are of one mind.
The measures of the land and the measure of or bodies are the same…
~~~
We were taught to believe
That the Great Spirit sees and hears everything
And that he never forgets;
That hereafter he will give every man
A spirit-home according to his deserts…
This I believe, and all my people believe the same.
~~~

NAVAJO (YEBECHI)
~~~
IN BEAUTY, I WALK…
TO THE DIRECTION OF THE SUN
IN BEAUTY, I WALK…
TO THE DIRECTION TRAVELING WITH THE SUN
IN BEAUTY, I WALK…
TO THE DIRECTION OF THE SETTING SUN
IN BEAUTY, I WALK…
ALL AROUND ME IS BEAUTY
IN BEAUTY, I WALK…
~~~

SEATTLE (SEATLH)
(1786 – 1866) Suquamish Chief
~~~
There is no death.
Only a change of worlds.
~~~

BLACK ELK
(1863 – 1950)
~~~
YOU HAVE NOTICED THAT EVERYTHING GROWS IN A CIRCLE,
AND THIS IS BECAUSE
THE POWER OF THE WORLD ALWAYS WORKS IN
C I R C L E S,
AND EVERTHING TRIES TO BE ROUND…THE SKY IS ROUND, AND
I HAVE HEARD THAT THE EARTH IS ROUND LAKE A BALL, AND
SO ARE ALL THE STARS. THE WIND, IN ITS GREATEST POWER,
WHIRLS. BIRDS MAKE THEIR NESTS IN CIRCLES, FOR THEIRS IS
THE SAME RELIGION AS OURS…. EVEN THE SEASONS FROM A
GREAT CIRCLE IN THEIR CHANGING, AND ALWAYS COME BACK
AGAIN TO WHERE THEY WERE. THE LIFE OF A MAN IS A CIRCLE
FROM CHILDHOOD TO CHILDHOOD, AND SO IT IS IN
EVERYTHING WHERE POWER MOVES.
~~~

GERONIMO (GOYATHLAY)
(1829 – 1909) Chiricahua Apache Chief
~~~
NO RELIGIOUS ORGANZATIONS,
NO SABBATH DAY, NO HOLIDAYS, AND
YET WE WORSHIPPED.
~~~
